I read their stories and i feel so sad for them that they had been through so much pain and there really wasnt anything that they could do about it and how wrong the Germans were for doing something so horrible to human beings.

After listening to the survivor’s story, I felt interested, because the survivor’s story of his life. One thing that I found particularly interesting is that he had changed his name three different times. After the survivor escaped, he had a hard time getting a job. I was surprised to learn how many survivors were still alive today. I was shocked to learn that the Nazi’s killed the people in the concentration camps many different ways.

The reason I did this was for a Language Arts project, but then I started to think that the Holocaust was cool to learn about. The survivors shared their stories, so I could learn how they survived through all of the things going on around them. It was also surprising how terrible it was back then. I also found it surprising how Hitler hated all of the people that were not like him. I found it surprising how they separated everyone, when they got to the camps. It was interesting to hear how life was, and how they survived in the concentration camps. I hope that this never happens again. shmm.org

After listening to the survivors story I felt really bad for Blanka because she had broken ribs and a broken spine. I also felt happy for her because she got out of the concentration camp and didn’t have to go through it like her family might have. Something else I learned is that after she finally came to the U.S, I was surprised to find out that guy came around showing a picture of her (Blanka’s) grandmother. I have been thinking also and wondering if the man with the picture knew she was coming to New York. Or if he was just showing the picture to everyone to see if they knew who was in that picture, so he could help them.

After listening to the survivor’s story I felt sad because hearing them tell how their families died was very sad and how they survived and went back for her mom but her mom died at a concentration camp. Something that I learned was that she is very smart because she got away 2 times. I learned how they got away and how they treated them.

After listening to the holocaust story of Thomas Buergenthal I felt very sad for him because his father died in the Holocaust. How did he not get captured when he was hiding from the Nazi soldiers? When I was listening to the story I was shocked that he was walking in the cold with barely any clothes on! I wonder how he felt when his father almost made it through the war and then died right at the end of it? I wonder how old Thomas was when he was in the Holocaust? I wonder how he old he was when he got to use a automatic pistol? I wonder if he was around my age?

I was ten years old when I first learned of the Holocaust. And something that struck me nearly as hard as what I found out had happenend on the soil I was living on, was the denial that -even in the early nineties- was connected to it. And while my parents were of little help, my granparents reacted rather hostile to me questioning them. But however horrid, it is crucial to keep the memory alive. It pains me to see Synagogues requiring police protection in this day and age. Awareness needs to be raised and preserved to prevent antisemitism from rising up again. Commemoration is needed in order to create one strong voice demanding: Never Again.

The Holocaust was a horrible tragedy that will never be forgotten. The survivors are amazing people with amazing stories and deserve to be remembered and recognized. These people went through so much with the loss of family and it is so important to know about this because we need to make sure this event never takes place again.
