Our Days of Remembrance activities started on 27 April with a mini museum display shown at the Main Chapel. We also put up two tri-folds as you entered the DFAC, explaining events during the Holocaust. We had an essay contest that encouraged military and civilians alike to participate. On 2 May 2008, we had our Observance program. Within the program we recognized the winners of the essay contest (per brigade and overall installation), two guest speakers; one spoke on his visit and experience to a concentration camp; the other spoke on his grandparent's experience during the Holocaust. All activities were successful. I would like to thank JoAnna Wasserman and USHMM for sending posters, ID cards, the dvd and literature, and their support in making the Remembrance a success here in theater. |

Name: Kenneth Underwood April 17, 2006 08:37 AM | Location: US Air Force Academu Message: The theme for the Remembrance Day Observation at the Air Force Academy is Learn, Prepare, and Act. The focus of the event is to create an understanding that it is not only important to remember what happened during the Holocaust over 60 years ago, but to take the lessons learned from that event and teach our future learders that it is up to them to act to prevent future attempts of genocide.
In the Observation we will begin with a short 10 minute film that will briefly discuss the history of the events of the Holocaust. We will have a candle lighting ceremony and a Holocaust survivor as our guest speaker. We will then present a prayer for the dead, and close with the sounding of the shofar to signify the importance of the event.
I also have 10 cadets who are currently taking a class on the Holocaust preparing a series of poster displays outlining the events of the Holocaust, focusing on rescuers, liberators, and those rescued, showcasing the value of leaders who made the right decisions even in the face of the most severe adversity. |

Name: SFC Hollis D. Champlain April 07, 2006 02:25 PM | Location: FORT SILL, OK Message: This web site has been very helpful in the planning of our "Days of Remembrance" week at the end of April. Here are some of the ideas we have come up with for our TRADOC base:
1. In our main PX area we have reserved an empty gift shop area to establish a Holocaust Museum for the entire week, so that family members and Soldiers can view many of the exhibits, posters, and videos we will have on display for the week. 2. We also are having a main luncheon with guest Speaker Mr. Martin Weiss (Holocaust survivor). At this event we will also have ID cards to give to each table and recognize 6 high school students from our local area who won our month long essay contest on this year's theme related the Nuremberg Trials. |
