April 8, 2013 3d Medical Battalion Diversity Committee had a Holocaust Remembrance Day. We had a candle lighting, remembrance readings and a prayer. We have the candle lit for the whole week staged at the QD where people will be able to stop by and read the history and timeline of Holocaust. It was a very intimate remembrance for the Holocaust. Marines and Sailors are becoming more curious and reading more of the Holocaust posters we have all over the battalion. Education and doing something in our own little ways can prevent genocide. We will always remember those lives taken and those people who survive and lived to educate us about a remarkable and sad history in our loves.

Living in such a military-dense area provides certain opportunities that otherwise would not be possible, such as piggy-backing on a remembrance event at another command or one offered through the local MWR. It's very important, as military members, to recognize the role the U.S. military played in ending the Holocaust and the subsequent role that America played in opening her doors to Holocaust survivors and refugees. Hopefully my brothers- and sisters-in-arms are taking the time to show their respect for those who were lost and honor the survivors and their families. It is for the defense of ALL freedoms that we wear the American military uniform. Let's ensure those coming up in the ranks learn from the past to prevent an event like the Holocaust from ever happening again.

Hello from Wiesbaden, Germany. For the past two years, the Equal Opportunity Advisors of the community have organized bus trips to Buchenwald Concentration Camp (about 2 hours away) to show our Soldiers and family members what happened during the Holocaust at Buchenwald. Always a big turnout and we see them in shock of what atrocities that happened there. I have been to Dachau several times, but it's too far away from Wiesbaden. Unfortunately this year, due to budget cuts, we will not be able to go to Buchenwald, but as an EOA, my brigade will host a candlelight ceremony and each attendee will read of the names of the victims of the Holocaust. I have many displays available, and have several "passports" to show our attendees. Being in Germany, there are many concentration camps, and we will create a map so our Soldiers and their family members can visit them and never forget what has happened.

Message:
During World War II, Norwegians wore paper clips on the collars of their clothes to demonstrate their opposition to Nazism and anti-Semitism. Thousands of people around the world will wear paper clips on their collars during the annual Days of Remembrance, May 1 - 8, 2011, to demonstrate support of equality and opposition to racism, prejudice, and hate crimes. Please wear a paper clip on your collar during this eek to honor the victims of the Holocaust, the victims of terrorism, and our military serving overseas who are too often victims of hate crimes. For more information, visit www.paperclipcampaign.com.

Knowing that something like that happened in the world scares me. It's sad to think even after the Holocaust there is still murder and persecution of people in other countries. This definitely makes me thankful that our society isn't like that and makes me feel extremly grateful for my family. We will always remember, always.

We were extremely fortunate to have Mr. Abraham Getman, a Holocaust Survivor, as our guest speaker this year. The program was held earlier this morning and also featured Meira Warshauer, composer and musician, and Serena Hill, vocalist. The invocation was provided by LT Mark Getman and the benediction was given by PFC Derek Friedman. Army Chaplain (LTC) Abdul-Rasheed Muhammad read a portion of the Quran that tells us if we take the life of one, it is as if we have taken the life of a nation. Approximately 150 basic combat training soldiers attended the program.
