Mathieu De Steur Dear Sir or Madam, I have read many authors that were deemed evil by the nazi powers. I admired H.G. Wells well before i knew his books were burned, and to be honest, it filled me with some pride, to admire something Nazis loathed, to love something which they wanted to die. No, it didn't suprise me that the Nazis targeted non-German authors, logical outcome of their ideology. Let us remember the words of Bertolt Brecht: "Tut mir das nicht an! Laßt mich nicht übrig! Habe ich nicht Immer die Wahrheit berichtet in meinen Büchern? Und jetzt Werd ich von euch wie ein Lügner behandelt! Ich befehle euch, Verbrennt mich! " "

Lindsay I'm not surprised that they targeted non-German authors. When there's an event or a group of people like the Nazis, something so big and so long. You can't underestimate them, with anything. You have to assume the worst, because most of the time it's worse.

Caitlyn WHAT IS THE WORLD TRUNING INTO?!?!?! I MAY BE YOUNG, AND PEOPLE MAY NOT RESPECT THAT I HAVE AN OPPINION OF MY OWN... BUT THIS IS INSANE! I MEAN REALLY BURNING A BOOK BECAUSE OF ITS CONTENT OF ITS LANGUAGE?!?!?!? AND THEN THE BANNING OF BOOKS FROM SHELVES AND SCHOOLS ALL ACROSS AMERICA! THIS IS NOT HOW OUR FOUNDING FATHERS PICTURED THE FUTURE OF AMERICA!

MARGOT MC GUIRE FOR 50 YRS I HAVE WONDERED HOW AMERICANS COULD LET THIS HAPPEN TO OTHER PEOPLE. WITH THE REACTION TO IRAQI FREEDOM, I NOW KNOW. IT'S A LACK OF EMPATHY FOR THE SUFFERING OF OTHERS. I HAVE READ ALL OF THE AUTHORS LISTED AND WOULD FIGHT FOR ANYONE ELSE TO HAVE THE PRIVILEGE.

Shannon Did Helen Keller ever get a repsonce back from the letter she wrote to the newspaper? What she wrote was so true, and I think she should be sudied more in schools these days, for ALL that she was and for all that she accomplished.

Fred Meyer This exhibit is particularly given that under the current Patriot Act, the government seeks the power to question librarians about which books patrons have borrowed, and to punish librarians who fail to providee the information or who inform patrons that their borrowings have been reported. Thus, I have written my congressional representatives to oppose the Patriot Act. Our local city council will likely go on record shortly as opposing the Patriot Act.

USHMM historian There were different "blacklists" at various times during the Nazi era. You can find a list of over 50 targeted authors and artists, as well as brief biographies and excerpts from their work, by visiting the "Authors & Works" sections of this online exhibit.

Mary I have been interested in the Holocaust since I was a young girl, however, I never delved into the authors of the book burnings. Could you list the authors?
